Guest Post From a new friend Lynn, I met her on LinkedIn:
Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions Get an Eco-Makeover From Mother-Daughter Authors of Celebrate Green!
Seattle, WA December 22, 2008– Resolutions like lose weight, reduce stress and get organized are so 2008.
For 2009, mother-daughter Seattle area writers Lynn Colwell and Corey Colwell-Lipson suggest considering “ecosolutions” like those below, excerpted from their new book, Celebrate Green! Creating Eco-Savvy Holidays, Celebrations and Traditions for the Whole Family.
|
Traditional Resolution |
Lynn & Corey’s Ecosolutions |
|
Lose weight/eat right |
Eat organic, whole foods and be aware of portions |
|
Pay off debt/save money |
Reduce consumption and pay off debt or pad your nest egg with money saved |
|
Get a better job |
Find or create work that is fulfilling for you and that contributes to the betterment of the world, however large or small the scale may be |
|
Get fit |
Ride your bike or walk for transportation. |
|
Get a better education/be constantly learning |
Educate yourself about issues that affect you, your family, your community, the global community and the planet. Strive to learn one new fact every day and share what you know with others. You could also take a class in biodynamic gardening or even earn a “green” MBA |
|
Drink less alcohol |
Drink less, but if you do consume, buy organic/biodynamically grown and give preference to glass bottles over aluminum |
|
Quit smoking |
Quit smoking and donate the money you previously spent on cigarettes(and/or the equivalent of time you spent smoking), to an organization that is working to prevent cancer. |
|
Reduce stress |
Pamper yourself with produce you make with organic food, herbs and oils, and only buy beauty products that are free of toxic chemicals (www.CosmeticDatabase.com). Patronize organic and eco-friendly spas. |
|
Take a trip |
Take an eco-vacation as close to home as possible (and buy carbon offsets for travel). |
|
Get organized |
Reduce the amount of “stuff” you acquire (and accumulate.). Take care of what you own and find ways to reuse or recycle everything else. Buy only high-quality, eco-friendly products that won’t need replacing, and clean your home only with homemade or non-toxic products from trusted companies. |
Resolutions that don’t need updating:
Volunteer to help others.
Enjoy more quality time with friends and family
Find your soul mate (assuming you’re not already married!)

Ryan back again,
I do have a few recommendations:
- Eating right/lose weight: Check out LocalHarvest, They can direct you to some local CSA’s or Farmers markets.
- Money/Debit: help, I recommend GetRichSlowly, J.D. is one of my favorite bloggers.
- Quit Smoking: I recently, 10 months ago, quit smoking with the aid of The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allan Carr. And I personally know a few other people who have used it to quit.
- Reducing stress: I’m planning on taking TaiChi classes with some friends next year. Might do some yoga too.
- Reduction of “stuff”: I’m going to give CraigsList a shot next week. Had luck in the past getting rid of everything put on there. Free and items bought. Also a great source for stuff you might need.
Thanks Lynn, I love the ideas you and your daughter have.
P.S. Watch for an Upcoming Give-Away (Hint: it’s some fun technology to use around the home.)
